Shanique Harnett _ Marketing Consultant

My life and experiences have been honed in my country of birth – Jamaica. The vibrancy, buoyancy and complexity of the Jamaican lifestyle and culture that attracts millions of visitors to the island year after year have always astonished me. Often travelling for business, these visitors are representatives of global corporations or private investors who aspire to expand their consumer base by introducing their products and services to the Jamaican market. A market which can be challenging to navigate for those uninitiated in the norms and traditions of the prideful and highly vocal island nation. In this game of International Marketing, many businesses and chains that flocked to the island in the past were successful, however, a few juggernauts failed – most notably McDonald’s which only lasted about 10 years and Taco Bell which was little more than a blip in time. In the same breath, other brands and chains thrived on the island – KFC, Burger King, Pizza Hut and many others spanning numerous industries and products. Witnessing these events, my question was, “Why did some fail and others didn’t?” This question inspired my love and pursuit of a career in business and marketing. I needed to understand the disconnect.

At the genesis of my career in marketing my goal was to assist brands in telling their story in a way that would transcend borders and cultures, in a way that would be more than just palatable to my fellow countrymen but rather adopted and even celebrated. After graduating from the University of the West Indies, I worked for over 9 years in various industries such as Publishing, Research, Fashion, Wholesale, Retail, Food, Entertainment, Advertising, Construction, Automotive and Pharmaceuticals. In 2015 I gained my first bit of experience in sales as an Inside Sales Associate at The Book Merchant Limited where I promoted products on behalf of Scholastic Corporation, Pearson Education and Highlights Magazine. From 2016 – 2018 I worked as a Media Planner and Buyer in two marketing and advertising agencies – TMC Mindshare (subsidiary of Mindshare Global) and C.G.R. Communications Ltd respectively. At these agencies, I had media planning and advertising oversight for brands Nestlé Jamaica, Payless ShoeSource, Campari, Appleton Estate, Sky Vodka, PepsiCo, Hyundai and Caribbean Airlines. 

From 2018 to 2020 I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work alongside the Marketing Director of MegaMart Wholesale Club Ltd – a four-chain superstore – as the Marketing Assistant with oversight of media planning and buying, event planning, public relations, content marketing, market research, industry relations and B2B marketing. In an effort to boost my experience in marketing analytics, in 2021 I accepted the position of Commercial Analyst at the Caribbean Cement Company Ltd (a subsidiary of Cemex). My objective in this role was to move beyond my usual creative and imaginative approach to marketing and ascend to new heights in the profession enabling me to analyze scores of data to facilitate informed and strategic decision making. In this role, I tracked and analyzed sales data, handled customer relationship management (CRM) and guided my sales team. 

In March 2022 I established Harnett Marketing with the goal of assisting entrepreneurs and small businesses that need big results with smaller budgets. For the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of serving my client RA Williams Distributors Ltd, providing services in email marketing and marketing strategy which have aided the company in optimizing its marketing communications and boosting its brand image. In August 2022 I moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba to pursue a Business Administration Diploma at Red River College Polytechnic. As I wrap up my studies in 2024 I continue to thrive as a professional, empowered by the lessons learned in a new market. 

My goal is to tell your brand story so it’s adopted and celebrated by your target market… to help you ‘Harness Your Potential‘. There is much work yet to be done, so let’s do it together.

I earned my Bachelor of Science (BSC.) in Management Studies, specializing in Marketing from the University of the West Indies, Mona in 2015. I graduated with First Class Honours with a 3.6/4.0 GPA. It was an honour and a privilege to complete a journey that had been wrought with expectations, challenges and ultimately – triumph. This program provided me with the opportunity to scrutinize my intrinsic strengths, practical skills and professional aptitude. Due to hard work and diligence, I thrived in the courses I enjoyed – Social Psychology, Marketing Strategy, Integrated Marketing Communications, Philosophy – and the ones that proved challenging – Calculus, Statistics, and Economics. The most important lesson I learned from my time at UWI  is to be undaunted by challenges. With a bit of determination, organization and creativity, much can be achieved .

In 2022 I enrolled in the Business Administration Diploma program at Red River College Polytechnic in Winnipeg, Manitoba. As a Marketing major, my goal in this 2-year program is to develop the skills needed to tackle the marketing and media landscape of the Canadian marketplace. During my time at RRC I’ve had the privilege of working with talented peers who share the same drive and ambitions to produce innovative and quality work, been guided and mentored by instructors who champion critical thinking and flourished in an environment conducive to growth and development. My accomplishment of being a consecutive 3 term Honour Roll student with a 4.42 GPA, is attributed to some of my greatest achievements in courses such as Digital Marketing, Business Strategy, Project Management, Event Marketing and Professional Selling.
